‘Got, Not Got’ is missing the old style Souvenir Shops, tucked in a corner of the ground, where there was room…
There’s a lot more going on down the ground than kicking a ball around these days. We’re talking business-class banqueting, stadium tours, helicopter rides, a members-only gym, conference facilities and unlimited retail opportunities.
The CLUB MEGA-STORE with it’s two acres of M&S quality fittings and layout designed to get you reaching for your wallet before you have even realised it.
It’s enough to make you yearn for the old-school souvenir shop, where they didn’t sell corporate badged grooming sets (eyebrow notcher; beard sculptor; shower gel) or calendars of the playing staff printed last July, and already way out of date.
No black third kits, either. Every club has a black or grey third kit now because they ‘look good with jeans’ according to the PR man. Hey, all sizes other than XXL and XXXL are reduced to a mere 30 quid! Which is to say, 50 quid to you.
Bring back the rubbish old shop, staffed by an old woman and a young woman, who didn’t mind you spending time rather than money. Your eyes grazing over the rows of patches, stickers, rosettes, pennants, keyrings, badges, mugs, silks scarves, woollen scarves…. until the club badge was burned permanently into your retina.
Until, finally: “Can I have an Arthur Graham rosette, please?”
