Thanks go out to our old mate Steve O’Neill for bunging us these pics of a bar in Jerez, Spain, which boggled his mind when he was on hols recently.
Yes, that’s right. It’s a tribute bar dedicated to none other than ‘the Blond Angel’ (with a bowl haircut and a bumfluff moustache) himself – Barcelona’s own Germanic ’80s Lady Di dreamboat, Bernd Schuster.
Jerez is in the south of Spain, seemingly off the beaten track to attract fan worship from sufficient numbers of fans of Barcelona or Real Madrid (where Bernd also played, and more recently spent a year as coach) eager to pay tribute…
The explanation lies in the fact that Schuster was boss of Jerez for a couple of seasons after the turn of the millennium – the club’s best ever, although still not good enough to get them out of Division 2…
We’re guessing it was enough to earn Schuster the alternative nickname of La Cepa de Oro – The Gold Strain, according to Google Translate? Or is that picture of a tree supposed to look like Bernd’s bowl cut?
Like Steve, we’re bemused. Anyone speak Spanish?
Or has anyone got any similarly unlikely footy tribute pics snapped on their world travels? The Ken Foggo Bar in Vladivostok, perhaps?
