In Anticipation of the Match…

Tonight Leicester City play Burnley at the King Power Stadium, a prospect that hangs over the day like a little black cloud…

Contrast how I feel today, and my grudging attendance at what has traditionally been the dullest fixture of the season, with how I used to feel as an 11 year old at the prospect of a night game under the floodlights.
Nothing, really nothing, was more exciting than the prospect of seeing Gods like Keith Weller and Frank Worthington illuminated by four floodlight towers and it would be all we talked about at school.
I recall one night match at a floodlit Filbert Street in the mid-70s when we overtook the QPR team coach on the way to the game on the Narborough Road. Being able to see Phil Parkes, Frank McLintock and Dave Thomas sitting on a coach took the thrill level almost off the meter…

Of course, it is me that has changed, as much as the game and its now too-efficient lighting systems that effortlessly turn night into day.
Should I happen to overtake the Burnley team bus tonight, I don’t think I’ll be thrilled…
