Legendary Yorkshire and England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott was appointed Melchester Rovers chairman in August 1984.
The surprise announcement was made before a pre-season friendly against local rivals Melboro’, when a helicopter landed in the centre-circle and out stepped the occupier of the crease to remark: “Hello lads, this is a real special day for me.”
Debate quickly starts to rage on the terraces…
“Does he know much about football?”
“I’m not bothered mate. Geoff and Roy Race are going to make quite a team.”
But, oh dear, Melchester are trying too hard to impress their new chairman, and lose to their closest rivals…
